At the American Music Awards tonight, stars were stepping out of their comfort zone left and right. Mary J. Blige wore a leopard print in gray tones, Jennifer Hudson showed off two inches of cleavage instead of four, and Taylor Swift went nuts in a strapless beaded dress that was ... okay, it was exactly like every other sparkly, princess-y gown she's trotted out on the red carpet this year. Yawn. There were a few standouts, for better or worse.
Here are the notable hits and misses:
Eastern influence: Katy Perry's last Asian foray was definitely campy, and while the pattern on her strapless gown edged into kitschy territory, the interesting draping elevated the look. Not sure how we feel about the blue heels with the gown, but on their own, they're killer.
Cutest couple: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, who looked like a couple of kids playing dress-up in their parents' clothes. Photographed by herself, however, Gomez displayed disconcertingly adult va-va-voom in a silver halter dress with a high slit and low neckline.
Striped strikeout: Julie Bowen is often fearless on the red carpet, but she should have been afraid, very afraid, of this short striped number. Maybe without the long sleeves it would have been more flattering, but as is, it just makes her look wide, something she is definitely not.
